Brief Book Reviews by Rachel Rosner, Jewish Book Festival Director

JCC Rochester

I am so excited to be writing my first column about Jewish books for you, my fellow Modern Jewish Moms.  I have been (a member of ModernJewishMom.com) a Yenta for just over a year now.  I am by no means a literary expert or critic, but I do love books, and I am lucky enough to work with Jewish books every day.

Meredith and I have met (in-person) twice at events related to Jewish books.  We thought that, since there are so many books available to us as Modern Jewish Moms, that I could make some suggestions to you.  I have the pleasure of attending the Jewish Book Council conference and the BEA each year for work.  Meredith did a great job with her presentation to us, so I’m sure she will be coming to a Jewish Book Festival near you this fall.

With the warm weather finally here, I thought I’d get you started with some selections (written with Jewish content or by a Jewish author) that will make for great summer reading.

The Spinster Sisters by Stacey Ballis

Pure chick-lit fun.  You may know Stacey from her appearances as a contributor on the Rachael Ray Show.

Swim to Me by Betsy Carter

Follow Delores on her journey to and from Weeki Wachee Springs, as one of their famous mermaids on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  Find out what happens when the person you want to be turns out to be yourself.

The Modern Jewish Girl’s Guide to Guilt, edited by Ruth Andrew Ellenson

If you haven’t already read this collection, don’t wait any longer.  This anthology includes essays written by some familiar Jewish women.  Terrific and fun read!

The Book of Names by Jill Gregory and Karen Tintori

The latest book written by this popular duo, who have appeared several times on the bestseller list.  The story combines Kabbalah, mystery and love of family.

Dropped From Heaven by Sophie Judah

A collection of beautifully told stories centering around the Bene Judah, India’s Jewish community.

Leave the Building Quickly by Cynthia Kaplan

This is Cynthia’s second hilarious book, her take on everything from her family to intelligent design and many other “important” issues.

I hope this list has a little something for everyone’s taste.  I look forward to bringing you more terrific books.  Have a great summer!
