What to do on Christmas

Modern Jewish Mom Archive

Yes, yes, I know--eat Chinese food and see a movie. (BTW--I've posted a very cute video for the song "Chinese Food on Christmas" on the Modern Jewish Mom social network.  Check it out!

And yes, if you are a doctor, you should volunteer to be on call in your practice.

And yes, it's lovely to use Christmas to volunteer at soup kitchens and shelters and the like.

But here is a great, new idea I read about in the Washington Post.  A group of Jewish families gets together every year for a party on Christmas Day.  Before coming over, each family picks something they own that they no longer want.  They then wrap it beautifully.  At some point in the party, everyone gathers and bids on the various presents.  The fun comes when everyone unwraps their prizes.  Some objects are wonderful and some are...well..junk.

Sounds like fun...but there's also an aspect of tzedekah to the game.  All money raised from the auction is then donated.  Either the party's hosts can decide on the charity or the guests can decide as a group.

What a great way to have fun with friends, get rid of some ugly bowl you received years ago as a wedding present, and give tzedekah!

Do you have a great way to spend Christmas Day?  Email us at Meredith@modernjewishmom.com and we will share with other Modern Jewish Moms!
