(This article is really for all Grandmas who want Chanukah to be special for their grandchildren.)
Every year we fight the crowds in the toy stores buying those expensive toys we think the children want. This year, Chanukah falls during Christmas so the stores will be mobbed.
I don't know about you but I'm sick of the $40/$50 Game Boy games/videos. With my grandchildren out of town, I think I'm buying what they like and by the time they get them, new toys have their interest.
I find I can't buy clothes anymore because I'm just not up on the styles (or I don't like today's belly exposed look) so clothes are out of the question.
Every year at the High Holidays my husband and I buy each grandchild a $100 Israel Bond. This year the bonds will reach them around Chanukah. As a financial investment they do not pay great interest but what we try to explain to the children is that they are making an investment in Israel. Of course, over the years the money does accumulate and when a bond matures the money is transferred into their college fund that their parents have established. So, the investment is meaningful in two ways--it supports your grandchildren's future educations and the continued well-being of the state of Israel.
So grandmas, pass up the toy store and call your local Israel Bond office!
So as my Mama always said, "I wish for you, what you wish for yourself."

By the way, if you have any questions, or have ideas for something you’d like me to write about, email my daughter and she’ll tell me (I’d say to email me, but…well…let’s just say I’d won’t be giving advice on how to use a computer.)
