What we can't eat (a reminder list)
Chametz (5 grains):
(during Passover, we do not eat any of these 5 grains that come into contact with water for more than 18 minutes)
wheat
spelt
barley
oats
rye
Kitniyot (legumes):
rice
corn
soybean (yep--there go the soy lattes!)
string beans
peas
lentils
peanuts
mustard
sesame seeds
poppy seeds
Some people use kitniyot based oils on Passovers, while others are more strict and only use olive or walnut oil.
Sephardi do eat kitniyot on Passover, while Ashkenazi do not.
Chametz Hunt (Bedikat Chametz)
Here’s a fun activity to do with your family the night before Passover. Go on a Chametz Hunt. Chametz is leavened food we are forbidden to eat during Passover.
Before your hunt begins, hide pieces of bread or cereal or cookies (basically, pieces of chametz) around your house. Summon your family into the kitchen. Tell them you need their help to make certain you’ve really gotten rid of all the chametz. Give your children a feather, a wooden spoon and a paper bag. Tell them to search the house. The entire family should travel together on the hunt. A parent should light the way with a lit candle. Take turns brushing the chametz onto the spoon with the feather and dumping it into the bag.
The next morning, burn the bag and say the following:
“All leaven or anything leavened which is in my possession, whether I have observed it or not, whether I have removed it or not shall be completely considered naught and ownerless as the dust of the earth.”
Happy Passover!

Matzah Brei
(my kids’ favorite)
Ingredients:
4 matzah
3 eggs, beaten
½ cup milk
3T oil or margarine
Directions:
1. Crumble matzah into bowl. Add eggs and milk and mix well. Let stand for five minutes to soften matzah.
2. Heat oil in a frying pan. Put matzah mixture into pan and fry on both sides until crisp. Top with ketchup.
