B'nai Mitzvah Advice

Save the Date (...and Day)

B'nai Mitzvah Archive

Busy moms are experts at juggling many projects at the same time, but planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah can challenge even a Super Mom.  When that long anticipated Mitzvah date is assigned, many parents rush to book their events at the local country clubs, hotels and synagogues.  Hysteria sets in as they discover that the "photographer of choice"is already booked for a wedding, the club is already reserved for an annual party, and the synagogue social hall will be under renovation.  Don't panic!  If you are a creative mom with time on your hands, then research B'nai Mitzvah resources through your synagogue office, the local JCC or Jewish Social Service Agency and start working on those centerpieces!  But, if you need more guidance, read on.

Before you make any decisions...stop and consider your priorities.  Is your goal to follow your Bar Mitzvah service with a seated kiddush lunch and a separate teen's party?  Or, do you envision a black tie evening with a New York DJ and the latest party trends?  Before you lock yourself into a location that two years later may not suit your needs, you should seek professional advice from an experienced event planner.  But, you've heard that this can be an expensive option?  Consider the hours you will save (the key word here) when you interview party specialists recommended by an experienced planner who considers your needs based on budget and your vision of a great event.

Now that you have a direction, let's ensure a successful party.  Check your calendar.  If you are concerned that your Mitzvah date may present a conflict for some of your guests, consider sending a Save-the-Date card up to a year in advance to ensure that they mark their calendars.  Some parents choose to send Save-the-Date announcements to their child's friends when the date may coincide with another child's date.  Providing information about your child's special occasion can provide some guarantee that relatives and your child's good friends will make a point of sharing this very special simcha (celebration) with your family.  A Save-the-Date can really Save the Day!
