Since 2003, Darfur, a western region of Sudan has been the location of the first genocide of the twenty-first century. A government sponspored militia called the Janjaweed has been systematically murdering and raping men, woman and children, Some 2.5 million innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes and now live in refugee camps, and over 400,000 people have died, with about 10,000 more people dying every month. The refugee camps on the Chad-Sudan border are unsanitary and under-supplied. Woman are afraid to go out of the camp to collect fire wood. As Jews, we have an obligation to speak out and take action, and to remember what Eli Wiesel once wrote: "Indifference to evil is evil."
